Kujichagulia: The Power to Name Yourself
Self-determination includes integrity and fairness in choosing your path.
Stand for justice and truth—even when facing those who have wronged you. Kujichagulia, the second principle of the Nguzo Saba, calls on us to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
At its heart, self-determination means having the power and freedom to make your own choices about your life. It means making choices about your life, your work, your purpose—on your terms. This applies not only to individuals but also to communities and nations seeking to govern themselves and control their own future.
What Does Kujichagulia Look Like?
Self-determination is dreaming your dream and walking it into the world.
It’s deciding for yourself who you are and what you stand for.
Maybe it’s choosing to be the best mechanic in your city, showing up with skill, pride, and honesty. Maybe it’s opening your own small business, learning what you need to learn, seeking out mentors, and building something with the resources you have. Kujichagulia is about doing the work—on purpose, with purpose.
It asks:
What do you love?
What are you called to create?
And how will you honor that calling with integrity?
Swahili Proverb:
Usione vyaelea vimeundwa.
(Don’t think things float by themselves—they have been built.)
— A reminder that behind every dream realized is effort, intention, and work.
Reflective Question:
Where in your life can you claim your voice, your choice, and your power more fully?
